Biography

Ra Avis (she/her) is a memoirist. A formerly incarcerated, autistic, Desi-Chicana writer, she explores the ways experiences attached to these identities shape both personal narratives and broader systemic realities. Her work navigates the deeply personal intersections of grief, incarceration, disability, and community. Avis is the author of Dinosaur-Hearted (Hostile 17 Print) and Flowers & Stars (Hostile 17 Print).

Beyond her writing, Avis supports system-impacted individuals through technology resourcing and legislative advocacy support. She specializes in projects that bridge digital and analog communities, centering care and connection. Avis is currently at work on Kites Library, an incarceration-centered zine archive dedicated to preserving system-impacted cultural knowledge and resource sharing. She is based in Long Beach, California.
