
Biography
Julie Poole (she/her) is a poet, writer, and journalist. Poole was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. Through her writing she explores class, displacement, and healthcare in the United States. Drawing from her own experience, she sheds light on the harm caused by involuntary hospitalization and long term side effects of psychiatric medications.
She has published work in Yes! Magazine, Slate, and the Nation. She is currently working on a memoir about the intersection of poverty and mental illness. She has published two books of poetry, Bright Specimen and Gorgeous Freak. She has received fellowship and grant support from the James A. Michener Center, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and Yaddo. In 2023, she was a National Fellow at USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism. She works as a bookseller and teaches creative writing in Austin, Texas.
